The inaugural Cowichan WILL Ride, part of the Savour Cowichan Festival, was a big success. Over 100 riders took part in rides of 3 lengths: 50 kms, 100 kms and 140 kms. The start and finish was at Merridale Cidery, with pizza and cider waiting at the finish line. The Cowichan Concert Band entertained while waiting for the start. A perfect fall day greeted the riders as they started in two waves, based on the distance. The route took them around Shawnigan Lake then through the wine country and back to Merridale for the short ride, or continuing up the Cowichan River then out to Maple Bay and back for the long ride. The ride was timed, with the winner of the 50 km ride taking 1 hr 32 mins and the winner of the 140 km ride taking 4 hrs 15 mins. Yours truly took 1 hr 48 mins to do the 50 km ride, which included a stop at Enrico Winery for some tasty wine electrolytes. Riders obeyed the rules of the road, and traffic along the route was respectful. Big thanks to David & Sandra Beggs of Cycle Therapy for organizing the event, which is the first annual, and thanks to all the volunteers for helping to make it a memorable ride on a beautiful day. Come join us next year.
